FDA Warned Lime Crime Cosmetics of Non-Approved Ingredients

The cosmetic brand Lim Crime has been known for their unusually and wide range of colors. One of their global best-selling products with the potential unsafe ingredients  is Velvetines Liquid Matte Lipstick.

The FDA has sen the company the warning letter since July but the issue has been let out to public this month (August 2015).

The lipstick is known for its high pigmentation, and long-lasting finish. And the ingredients in question are ferric ferrocyanide and ultramarines, both coloring agents.

“The FDA has approved both for use in “externally applied cosmetics,” but that designation doesn’t include lipstick, since it comes into contact with the mucous membranes of the mouth and ingredients can be absorbed. (To be clear, the FDA has not tested the lipsticks. It issued the warning letter based on the ingredients listed on the label.) That leaves Lime Crime with two choices: Get rid of those ingredients if they are indeed in the lipsticks, or fix the labeling if the ingredients aren’t present. ” – Source : http://fashionista.com/2015/08/lime-crime-fda-warning

Other previous accusations that the brand had to confront and issue in the past are;

  • Ineligible to call itself a ‘vegan brand’ when their products contain beeswax and carmine. (the company owner Doe Deere addressed the issue and removed the ingredients)
  • In February of 2015 Lime Crime faced a credit and data breach (the company did not handle in an expeditious or forthright manner)
  • Lime Crime has been taken off of Sephora’s shelves.
