Despite the fact that the current trend may seem like anything new, the checkerboard print has been around for thousands of years. In fashion terms, this print has been recycled over the years, first appearing in publications in the 1950s and 1960s, then reappearing in the 1990s and early 2000s.
Checkerboard isn’t one of those print trends that disappears as quickly as you can get it. When you take something with a historical context and give it a trendy twist to make it relevant to today’s audience, it’s likely to get a lot of love because it’s a clean and classic graphic. Today’s trends are reminiscent of the fashion of the late 1990s and early 2000s, with a resurgence of grunge and Y2K trends. So, it’s no surprise that the checkerboard print is making a strong comeback too.
