Al made his triumphant return on January 6, 2023. Al said, “My heart is bursting right now.” “I’m so thrilled to see all of you and the crew and everyone. Right now, I’m running on adrenaline. I’m so thrilled to be here.”
What are blood clots?
Blood clots are “gel-like clumps of blood”. According to the Mayo Clinic, they are beneficial when they are formed in response to an injury or cut, closing the injured blood vessel, thereby stopping bleeding. “Some blood clots form inside your veins for no good reason and don’t dissolve naturally. These may require medical attention, especially if they’re in your legs or in more vital places like your lungs and brain.” Many conditions can cause this type of blood clot.”
Blood clots can form from an injury, or they can form inside a blood vessel that does not have obvious damage. When they build up they can travel to other parts of the body, causing serious conditions such as heart failure, stroke, pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis.
They can be treated with blood-thinning medications, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine. Changes to your lifestyle – getting more exercise, lowering your blood pressure, changing your diet – can also help prevent blood clots from forming.
How long has Al Roker been sick?
Al has been immunocompromised for years following his multiple surgeries and his cancer diagnosis in 2020. “I had blood clots that they think came after I had COVID in September,” he said. “I was having this internal bleeding, I lost half my blood. They were trying to figure out where it was. They went in, they did surgery, and it ended up with two bleeding ulcers. They Had to have a colon resection and my gallbladder removed. I went in for one operation, and I got four for free!”

“It is not lost on us that it is a major, major thing for Al to be here. He is a living, breathing miracle. He really is. I am not exaggerating this,” said Al’s wife he said, Deborah Roberts, during your first day Today. “I don’t think so. Al was a very, very, very sick man and I don’t think most people know that.” He was a medical secret for weeks. It was the most tumultuous, terrifying trip we’ve ever had.”
