Best players available, signing updates

If Major League Baseball is truly a copycat industry, this should be a lucrative winter for free agents.

Five years after executive indifference led to a chilling, multiyear depression for top players, one year after a 99-day lockout split a sizzling market in half and led to a frenzied signing period just days from Opening Day, some semblance of stability has returned to baseball.

The COVID-19 cancellations and restrictions of 2020-21 are largely gone. A five-year collective bargaining agreement was struck, even as the onerous qualifying offer will still stick to a handful of free agents.

And 2023 should resemble something close to a “normal” season for the first time since 2018, bereft of labor strife, juiced baseballs and nascent infectious disease. What’s more, as the highly aggressive San Diego Padres and Philadelphia Phillies joined the stalwart Houston Astros and New York Yankees in baseball’s final four, owners received a not-so-subtle reminder: Aggression helps. Spending helps.

With that, a look at the top 87 free agents, from the elite to those reasonably expected to sign a major league contract. Rankings based on projected future performance and perceived market value:

(Age as of April 1, 2023; 2022 team)

1. Aaron Judge (30, OF, Yankees)

He does not play the game’s most premium position, but Judge has many factors in his favor: A potential bi-coastal bidding war, a Yankees franchise that should be highly motivated to retain him and, oh yeah, the AL-record 62 homers he slugged last season. Judge may not get the lengthy deal the younger shortstop on this list may receive, but a high annual value and his greater appeal should put him atop this winter’s market.

During the episode, the prime minister shared his thoughts on Canada’s efforts to embrace diversity, noting there is a lot more work to do toward building allyship in Canada.

After his remarks, the queens were touched by his words.

Competitor Stephanie Prince was teary-eyed, saying Trudeau’s work on immigration made it easier for the performer to migrate to Canada for a better life.

The pre-taped Crave series aired on the same day Trudeau testified before the public inquiry examining his government’s decision to invoke the Emergencies Act to help clear last winter’s “Freedom Convoy” protest blockades.

The guest judges for the episode included “Canada’s Drag Race” winner Priyanka and activist Sarain Fox, who joined permanent judge Traci Melchor.

Host Brooke Lynn Hytes thanked Trudeau for supporting the LGBTQ community and marching in the Pride parade.

“Can we move beyond ‘tolerate’ and start embracing, and loving, and accepting, and learning from and being challenged by? That’s how you build a resilient society,” Trudeau responded. “That’s what we’re trying to do in Canada, and we have a lot of work still to do.”

Trudeau’s appearance was brief, matching the vibrant energy of the spinoff, in which international drag queens compete in challenges and lip-sync battles until a winner is crowned.

“Hate to see you leave, love to watch you walk away, baby,” shouted Icesis Couture as the group watched Trudeau make his exit – or sashay away.

’90 Day Fiance: HEA’ Exclusive Preview: Liz Admits She Thinks Ed Is Going To Leave Her

Things get incredibly awkward when Ed leaves Liz’s side in this EXCLUSIVE preview of the November 26 episode of 90 Day Fiance: Happily Ever After. Liz ends up getting grilled by members of Ed’s family, who are pretty vocal about how Ed’s mom isn’t Liz’s biggest fan.

“This is typical Ed. He told me he would not leave my side,” Liz says. “The second we walk in the door, boom, gone. I thought there was a respect that he would make me comfortable until I adjusted and got to know the family, but I’m disappointed.”

As Ed hangs with the boys, Liz gets pulled aside by the women in Ed’s family. Ed’s niece asks about wedding plans and a possible wedding date.

“We don’t have a date for the wedding. We’re in no rush. I think the pressure of a wedding and his mom not being on board… I don’t want to look back in a year or two and have that be a regret,” Liz admits.

Liz doesn’t think Ed is “going to be ready to get married until his mom can accept me. It’s a little scary because I see Ed eventually leaving me because his family’s not accepting.”

Liz tells Ed’s family that she doesn’t know if Ed’s mom, Normawas invited or even knew about this family gathering. Liz discovers that Norma wasn’t formally invited because Ed and Norma are still working through some things.

“Ed’s been her main support for a long time,” Ed’s sister Christine says. Christine reveals that Ed’s mom “felt forced out.” and this whole situation “hurt her very badly.”

Ed and Liz’s journey to the altar hasn’t been an easy one so far. They’ve faced major roadblocks, especially with Ed’s family not being overly supportive of the relationship. A wedding is still in their future, but these two definitely have work on jealousy and family troubles. New episodes of 90 Day Fiance: Happily Ever After air Sundays at 8 p.m. on TLC.

Princess Diana’s ‘The Crown’ Story Line Wasn’t Fully Accurate: Royal Expert

It’s not a documentary! Princess Diana’s story line on season 5 of The Crown wasn’t entirely accurate — especially when it came to her Panorama interview, a royal expert exclusively reveals to Us Weekly.

“Look, it’s drama. It’s fiction that’s somewhat based on fact,” royal expert Nick Bullen tells Us of the Netflix series’ latest installment, which premiered in November.

The True Royalty TV editor in chief explains that the Martin Bashir interview, which originally took place with Diana in 1995, wasn’t depicted as truthful as possible on The Crown.

“Virtually all of it was — certainly — sort of widened the mark,” Bullen says of the two-episode arc. “I think they didn’t even go far enough in looking at how Bashir got the interview. I mean, they sort of touched on it, you know, it was incredibly fraudulent what went on there.”

Elizabeth Debicki and Salim Dau Keith Bernstein/Netflix

Diana made headlines in 1995 after sitting down with Bashir for Panorama’s tell-all interview. During the conversation, the princess spoke candidly about her relationship with King Charles III following their 1992 separation. (The duo finalized their divorce in 1996, one year before Diana was killed in a car crash in Paris.) Bashir died in 2009.

In November 2020, Diana’s oldest son, Prince William, spoke out in support of BBC’s investigation onto Bashir’s questionable tactics while interviewing the late royal. BBC issued a public apology to Charles74, and his two sons, William, 40, and Prince Harryas well as Diana, in July after finding that Bashir “deceived” Diana throughout the Panorama discussion.

While the Netflix series touched upon Diana’s desire to get back into Queen Elizabeth II’s good graces after the disastrous interviewBullen reveals to Us that the late Princess of Wales was much more remorseful than she appeared on camera.

“I think in the initial days after [the interview] she really felt she’d got her voice out there,” he says. “She also believed what Bashir had told her about the security services listening to her and what was going on. I think as more clarity set in it became more and more apparent it was a huge mistake.”

The amateur royal notes that Diana ultimately “realized she shouldn’t do it” and “absolutely” felt remorse for her choice.

“To be fair, what The Crown did get right was the fact that Charles Spencerher brother, had started to have misgivings about Bashir before the interview and had tried to persuade Diana this perhaps wasn’t the right way to go about it,” Bullen continues. “As we all saw in the show, Bashir was recreating bank statements, trying to claim that people were being paid by the security services. And if someone shows you that, you probably do believe it, even if you are not already paranoid about what’s going on. I think she did regret it.”

The journalist also criticized The Crown for the season 5 episodes that “damage the monarchy,” including story lines about Charles during the ‘90s.

“When Charles does the handover of Hong Kong, it appears that he takes [Queen Consort Camilla] for a holiday on the Royal Yacht Britannia. Simply not true,” Bullen claims. “The idea that Diana was meeting Mohamed Al-Fayed at the Windsor Horse Show. Not true. The idea that Princess Margaret and the queen are having standup round about Peter Townsend — not true.”

He concludes: “What The Crown is very clever at is it does take sort of enough fact to be able to spin up a version of the truth. I think people have gotta watch it with an eye to this is drama that is based on real life events. But that’s the danger … is how far the real life events go.”
