series finale The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel San Francisco begins in 1965. Lenny is doing a standup routine, and it’s not going well. He is aimless on stage and quickly loses the attention of the audience. He is no longer the Leni he once was. His sharpness is gone. He’s forgetting bits. He is splashing in the limelight.
Susie is looking at Lenny in horror. She can’t believe what she is seeing. Later, Susie approaches Lenny and asks him to move in with her. She is Miz’s manager and can help get her back on her feet. She calls her standup a “f***ing disgrace”.
Lenny does not take Susie up on her offer. He doesn’t think he has a future in standup. Susie begs Lenny to reconsider. “Because you’re Lenny Bruce. There’s only going to be one of you. Let’s get him back,” Susie says. Lenny is called away before Susie can give the real answer. “Keep those favors up. Use them for someone worthy,” he says. Before leaving, Lenny asks if Midge is around. Susie says no.
When Susie walks out, Midge is there smoking a cigarette. Miz immediately asks about Lenny. “He’s a mess, Mary,” she says. Midge does not go inside to see her, but she is devastated, leaving Lenny behind. As we all know, Lenny would die a year later.
The episode flashes back to 1961 New York City. Susie is currently sleeping on a park bench. She gets arrested after fighting with the police. Miz bails him out. Midge takes Susie out for coffee to get the full story. Midge knows that Susie is upset, but Susie holds her lips. Slowly but surely, Susie begins to open up about Heidi and their past. Susie moved to New York after Heidi returned from Paris when they were young. This is the first and last time Susie falls in love.
Gordon reluctantly tells Midge that she is going to be on the show tonight. Midge runs straight to tell Susie the news. Apparently, Headey only asked.
Meanwhile, Moishe tells Joel that he is going to retire from the company. After falling a shower, he is reunited with Shirley. As soon as they can walk again, they’re selling the house and getting a condo in Boca Raton. Suddenly, Joel receives a call from Midge. the gordon ford show, Joel is beaming with pride. He gives Midge her blessing to talk about him during her routine if she needs to.
“Have I ever told you that you are amazing?” she asks. Joel replies, “You have. Very. more than i deserve Miz seeks out Joel in the audience. Joel promises that he will be there. Miz quipped, “I’ll leave the tickets under ‘Who Got Away’.”
Abe goes home to tell Rose about Midge being turned on. the gordon ford show tonight. Rose is not happy and says she is not leaving. Rose can’t believe Midge has been trying to call her all day at Abe’s request. Well, the phone’s off. Midge enlists Joel, Shirley and others to try to capture Rose throughout the day. Once Rose learns that, she and Abe leave in a huff. There are no cabs available on the Upper West Side. They ran on the road trying to get a cab. No amount of bargaining works. Rose even presented her wedding ring! They end up on the bus, which Rose later calls a “harrowing” experience.
As she was getting up, Gordon decided to run Midge down. She is not going on the show to perform. She is just coming as a writer. Susie runs after Gordon, but he isn’t changing his mind. Susie yells for Mike in the middle of the office. He doesn’t know what is happening. She demands that he fix it. Gordon turned Midge’s moment into a human interest piece at the last minute.
Miz gets ready and takes her to the set stool. Joel wonders what’s going on, and Midge just shakes her head. Gordon begins interviewing Miz during the show. It is very cut and dry. He calls her “resident female writer”, and he does so offensively. Miz decides to take her shot. Gordon cuts him off and goes to commercial, even though he still had 4 minutes left.
Mike demands that Gordon get ready for those 4 minutes. Joel visits Susie to find out what’s going on. Susie feels it is all her fault because of Heidi’s situation. Mike tries to convince Gordon to let Midge do her job. It’s only a matter of 4 minutes.
Miz gets off the stage to talk to Abe. He tells her that no matter what happens he is very proud of her. Rose is so grateful that Midge went so far to bring her here.
Miz goes back to his seat and looks at Mike. She grabs Susie. These are the 4 most important minutes of his life. Midge is thinking about doing something that could “doom” her and Susie. Susie knows exactly what Midge means and gives her the OK. “Boobs up,” says Susie. That’s all Miz needs to hear.
Midge takes her seat on the stool and tells Gordon that she has “never been great at following the rules” before going live. She jumps up, leaps off the stool and grabs the mic. She gets 4 minutes and shines. This is a game-changing moment. The crowd goes crazy for him.
“I think it’s inevitable that they’ll hate me when they grow up,” Midge regularly says of her kids. His jokes all over the land. Gordon is laughing too. Everyone is circling around Midge.
“I want to live the big life. I want to experience everything. I want to break every single rule out there,” Midge says. “They say ambition is an unattractive quality in a woman. Maybe. But you know what’s really unattractive? Something’s waiting to happen. Midge isn’t waiting around. She’s walking straight into stardom. The crowd swells.
After her standup, Gordon welcomes her to the chair and begins interviewing her. He calls his routine “terrible”. Gordon admits that he was wrong about her. He introduces her as “the gorgeous, magical, wonderful Mrs Maisel”. Miz kisses Joel in the crowd. As the crowd continues to applaud Midge, Gordon whispers, “You’re fired.”
Six months ago, Lenny is trying to teach Midge the ways of being famous. It has been a good night for both of them. their only night together. She opens her fortune cookie, the same one she had kept and re-reads it the night everything changed for her.
The show jumps forward to 2005. His team is working on his schedule. The Miz Wants To Be Booked And Busy But She Definitely Wants to be in New York for the holidays. Midge walks through her lavish apartment and lovingly touches a photo of her wedding with Joel, a coveted possession. After spending their evening alone, she calls on Susie. they are going to watch an episode of Risk: Tournament of Champions Together, even if they’re on different coasts.
Midge tells Susie about her day. Midge wants Susie to get back to work. Susie has done her time. Midge and Susie talk on the phone and laugh, just like old times. As it should always be.
