earlier this week SceneWhoopi lambastes the show and actually calls it “the beginning of the downfall of society”.
And while Whoopi has every right to feel that way about a televised singing competition, it probably wasn’t a good idea to bring it to ABC – the network. American Idol Air.
she also got Sceneexecutive producer Brian Teta in conversation… and he awkwardly had to try to stop her.
“We, as a society, like to judge people by looking at stuff,” she said. “I’ve always thought that the beginning of the downfall of society… what’s the name of that show?”
Brian calls to remind Whoopi that the show she was thinking about was American Idol And that it was on ABC.
“It wasn’t always on ABC. When it started, it was on another network,” Whoopi said, referring to the show that ran on Fox from 2002 to 2016.
She continued, “I’m going to tell you why. Once we gave people the ability to judge other people, I think we became obsessed with it and it spiraled out of control… He invited the public to decide who that person was.”
I feel like Brian must have been completely off camera at this point because he finally caught Whoopi’s eye – and she suddenly stopped.
“Did you really do that?” Whoopi asks Brian, seemingly referring to what he did off camera.
“The thing is, we talked about it, it got better, you like it now, remember?” Brian awkwardly nods to her.
Trying to cover Whoopi’s track, the women told ABC that Whoopi was Definitely A fan of the show.
Whoopi also seems to have received the message explaining that statue has become a “separate show” since its addition to the ABC lineup.
“Judges are different,” she said. “When it first started, it was very different … and ABC knows I feel that way. I’ve told them, it’s nothing to do with them.”
TBD if ABC thinks it “has nothing to do with them” — but I think we can all assume Whoopi won’t be talking about it American Idol anymore!
